Sleep Flashcards
Circadian Rythm
A physiological response that is controlled by a 24-hour cycle.
* Hypothalamus- the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which regulates the circadian
rhythms
* Melatonin- sleep
* Adenosine: produced by thalamus to shut down cog processes when sleep
deprived
* BUT
* Ss awake for 11 days
Stages of sleep
BATHED
beta
alpha
theta
(sleep spindles)
delta waves
Beta
wide awake and alert (hi freq, irregular)
Alpha
(hi freq., low amplitude, regular pattern)
becomes drowsy and transitioning to sleep.
Stage 1- Theta
(only a few minutes, lower freq and amplitude) drifting off to sleep or before you wake up
Stage 2- Sleep Spindles
(changes b/w high and low amp and freq)
Stage 3 and 4- Delta Waves
(slow freq., high amplitude, regular pattern) memory consolidation- to solve problems in rem sleep
Rem Sleep
Paradoxical sleep- Beta waves
* The muscles in neck and limbs go limp- body is in an excitatory state
physiologically, but really can’t move
is a part of stage 4 (eyes dart back and forth as well)
Psychoanalytic
expression of unacceptable thoughts and feelings that had been
repressed into the unconscious, and various symbols represented those thoughts
and feelings. Manifest and latent content. \
Everything is “wish fulfillment”: the Burning Dream.
Biological (Activation synthesis theory)
Activation-Synthesis theory- Dreams are nothing more than random
and meaningless activity of nerve cells in the brain
Cognitive
extensions of waking life, so that many of our thoughts and concerns,
especially emotional ones, are reflected by our dreams. Problem solving
Continuum of consciousness
A continuum is a thing whose parts cannot be separated.
* DAY and NIGHT
Controlled processes
Full awareness, alertness and concentration.
Automatic processes
Little awareness. Can do more than one thing at a time.
Daydreaming
An aspect of automatic processes, uxually occurs during boring or repetitive
situations.
