Racism And Social (final) Flashcards
The in-group Bias
We feel positive emotions and offer special treatment for those in the in-group.
We feel negative emotions and will take the resources of out-group members
without sympathy.
Super stimulus
race like strawberry cheesecake, combines many elements to survive together. t automatically, nonconsciously, and instantly elicits the IG bias, prejudices and
stereotypes.
Prejudice
a hostile or negative feeling toward a distinguishable group
Stereotyping
assigning identical characteristics to any person in a group based
only on group membership
Discrimination
acting differently toward a member of the out group
Prejudice- emotion
Stereotype- cognition
Discrimination- behavior
But, prejudice and stereotyping can occur AT THE SAME TIME:
Nonconscious Stereotype Activation
Nonconscious Stereotype Activation
At the moment that I perceive a member of the outgroup, my stereotypes are
activated too.
Might cause interaction with that person to be a SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY.
Naturalist Fallacy
“What is natural is good”
Love, friendship, altruism are natural, but so are violent aggression, cancer, opium.
Ultimate attribution error
Extending the FAE to all members of an out group: They do what they do BECAUSE
they are Latino, Black, White, etc…
Outgroup Homogeneity
We great overestimate the degree to which outgroup members are alike.
Works at the level of perception: Members of other races DO look alike to us.
Out group’s failures blamed on their dispositions:
“They fail because they’re stupid; we fail because we didn’t try.“
Cognitive dissonance
a state of unpleasant psychological tension caused by
contradictions b/w behavior and attitudes, which motivate us to reduce our
discomfort by changing our attitudes or our behavior.
Actor-Observer Bias
As actor, situational; as observer, dispositional atts
Self-Serving Bias
