Symptoms of slapped cheek
A
- Mild feverish illness - general headache, coryza

When is the infectious phase?
A
The phase preceding the rash
Once rash appears, no longer infectious
Children feel better once rash comes

Describe the rash in slapped cheek?
A
- Cheeks get bright red rash
- Spreads to proximal arms and extensor surfaces
- Spares palms and soles of feet

Major complications
A
- Pregnancy - affects baby < 20 weeks of pregnancy and can cause hydrops foetalis
- Aplastic anaemia - in sickle cell disease, virus supresses erythropoesis causing pancytopenia
