SL5 Flashcards
What are the 2 divisions of the nervous system and what are they comprised of
Central nervous system: brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system: nerves that are afferent and efferent divisions
What makes up the afferent division
somatic/visceral/special sensory
what makes up the efferent divisoin
somatic/autonomic motor
what are the divisions of the autonomic motor
sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric
What is the difference between afferent and efferent divisions
-Afferent is sensory and carries info from sensory receptors to CNS
-efferent carry info from CNS to effector organs
what is the difference between somatic and visceral sensory
-visceral is info from viscerl organs
-somatic is from the skin, muscles and joints
what is the responsibility of the Somatic nervous system
conscious, voluntary/ reflax control of muscles
what is the responsibility fo the autonomic nervous system
-controls involuntary actions of glands, smooth muscle and cardiac muscles
What are neurons
they are excitable, able to transmit electrical impulses and allow cells to communicate with one another
what are neuroglia
they are non-neuronal support cells that are unable to transmit electrical impulse
what do interneurons do
they connect neurons within the CNS
what is a synapse
this is the junction where one neuron alters the electrical chemical activity of another neuron, sometimes they use NT
what are the different types of Neuroglia and what is their function
- oligodendrocytes and schwan cells: they form mylein gin the CNs and PNS
- astrocytes: anchors the neurons to capilaries and regulates the extracellular fluid by removing K+ iions and NT around the synapse
- ependymal cells: regulate and produce CSF
- Microglia: macropahe like and perform immune function in the CNS
