Sky Science #2 Flashcards
What is one fact about each layer of the earth’s atmosphere?
Troposphere: This is where weather happens
Stratosphere: It contains the Ozone (O3) layer
Mesosphere: Protects us from meteor and other space debris. Coldest layer of the atmosphere (-88°)
Tremosphere: This is the hottest layer of the atmosphere. Contains fewest air molecules
Ionosphere: The northern lights are created in this layer by the electrically charged ion
Exosphere:satellites orbit in this layer thermosphere
What are the names of the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere?
Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Tremosphere Ionosphere Exosphere
What are three reasons why our planet is the only planet in our solar system that we know is able to support life?
- Atmosphere
* not to close but not to far from the sun
What does the word emit and reflect mean? What objects in space that emit light? What objects in space reflect light?
Emit~To send or give out
Reflect~ can’t create light reflects it
Emit~Stars ~Sun Reflect~Planets ~Moon ~Satellites
Why is it harmful to look at the sun with your naked eye? What are two safe methods for viewing the sun?
Looking at the sun with the naked eye can cause damage
Special eclipse glasses
Pinhole camera Only needs 2
Welders mask
What positions do the earth the moon and the sun have to be for a parallel or total solar eclipse to occur?
The sun moon and the earth lineup in a straight line during a partial or total solar eclipse
Why does the sun appear to move across the sky each day?
The sun appears to move across the sky each day because the earth rotates
What causes day and night?
Day and night are caused by the earth rotation
What is the difference between direct and indirect ( slanting ) rays from the sun? What causes the rays become more or less direct?
The difference between direct and indirect raise our direct rays are warmer/summer indirect Rays are colder/winter
The Rays become more or less indirect by the tilted earth or how far away you are from the sun
What are the two reasons that earth experiences for different seasons each year?
Tilt to be earth/revolution (orbit) around the sun
When do the spring and fall equinoxes occur? When do the summer and winter solstice a cook corn? What happens to the amount of daylight on each of the states? What causes solstices and equinoxes?
Summer solstice June 21 longest day
Winter solstice December 21 shortest day
fall equinox September 21 day/night 12/12
spring equinox March 21 day/night 12/12
The revolution around the sun causes the solstices and equinoxes
How do the seasons compare in the northern and south and hemispheres?
The seasons are opposite in the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere.
