what openings are in the ethmoid bone?
cribriform plate, anterior ethmoidal foramen, posterior ethmoidal foramen
what does the cribriform plate transmit?
olfactory nerves (CN I)
what does the anterior ethmoidal foramen transmit?
anterior ethmoidal nerve (nasociliary nerve branch) and vessels (ophthalmic artery and vein)
what does the posterior ethmoidal foramen transmit?
posterior ethmoidal nerve (nasociliary nerve branch) and vessels (ophthalmic artery and vein)
what bones have openings in the middle cranial fossa?
sphenoid bone, temporal
what openings are in the sphenoid bone?
optic canal, superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, foramen spinosum
what does the optic canal transmit?
optic nerve (CN II), ophthalmic artery
what does the superior orbital fissure transmit?
oculomotor nerve (CN III), trochlear nerve (CN IV), abducens nerve (CN VI), branches of ophthalmic division of trigeminal (CN V1) (nasociliary, frontal, lacrimal nerve), superior ophthalmic vein
what does the foramen rotundum transmit?
maxillary division of trigeminal nerve (CN V2)
what does the foramen ovale transmit?
mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3) and motor root of trigeminal nerve
what does the foramen spinosum transmit?
middle meningeal artery (branch of maxillary artery), nervus spinosus (meningeal branch of V3)
what openings are in the temporal bone within the middle cranial fossa?
carotid canal, hiatus of facial canal, hiatus for lesser petrosal nerve
what does the carotid canal transmit?
internal carotid artery, internal carotid plexus (postganglionic sympathetic axons from superior cervical ganglion)
what does the hiatus of facial canal transmit?
greater petrosal nerve (VII)
