Skin Neoplasia Flashcards
The ABCD’s of melanoma are…
Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter
The official term for a common “mole”
Nevus
A mole with a large white ring around it is called a…
Halo nevus
A large, red, dome-shaped nodule. It likely can become malignant, so should be taken off.
Spitz nevus
A deep nevus where pigmentation reaches deep into the dermis.
Blue nevus.
Nevus found on the eye
ota nevus
When isolated, these moles do not seem to have increased risk of melanoma. When multiple present, there is an increased risk.
Dysplastic nevus
Cancer of melanocytes
melanoma
Phrase meaning “still in epidermis”. If in this state, there isn’t risk of metastasis.
In situ
Best indicator of probability of metastasis.
Breslow’s depth
Process where you find the first lymph node of potential metastasis.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy
Proliferation of keratinocytes that’s frequently benign. Incredibly common. Looks scaly on the mole in the picture
Seborrheic keratosis
Non neoplastic cutaneous lesion with a “bag-like” tumor and stalk
Skin tag
Down growth of epidermis into the skin, resulting in keratin deposit on the inside. Rupture easily and can become inflamed.
Epithelial cyst
Benign neoplasm of epidermis that may precede squamous cell carcinoma. Induced by sunlight, results in hyperkeratosis
Actinic keratosis
Cancer of the upper layers of skin epithelium, related to sun. Rarely metastasizes.
squamous cell carcinoma
Cancer of the lower epidermal cell layers. Rarely metastasizes.
Basal cell carcinoma
Hereditary condition resultiing in increased risk of hamartomas and malignancies. Results in mucosal papules and cobblestoning of the tongue.
Cowden’s syndrome
Cowden’s syndrom results from a mutation in what gene?
PTEN (tumor suppressor gene)
Acquired increase in sebaceous glands, usually on the face. non-neoplastic
Sebaceous hyperplasia
Benign neoplasm of sebaceous glands
Sebaceous adenoma
Malignant neoplasm of sebaceous glands
Sebaceous carcinoma
Condition resulting in an increased risk of sebaceous adenoma or carcinoma, as well as keratoacanthomas
Muir-Torre syndrome
Muir-torre syndrome results from mutations in what genes?
MLH1, MSH2 (DNA mismatch repair genes)
