Skin Immunology Flashcards
What is and Antigen?
A protein
What is another name for the Keratin Layer?
Stratum Corneum
What do Keratinocytes do when stimulated by a pathogen?
Release Anti-microbial peptides (AMPs)
Produce Cytokines
Produce Chemokines
What is characteristic of Langerhans cells?
The Birbeck granule ( tennis racket)
Where do Langerhans cells present their antigens?
Effector T cells
Which CD4+Th cells are associated with which disease?
Psoriasis
Atopic dermatitis
Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis
Psoriasis Th1
Atopic dermatitis Th2
Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis Th17
Where are T cells produce and where are they sensitised?
Produce in the Bone marrow and Sensitised in the thymus
What are the two types of T cells and what do they do ?
CD4+ Helper T cells
CD8+ Cytotoxic T cells
Where do you find Plasmacytoid dendritic cells and what do they do ?
In diseased cells
They produce TNFalpha
What is a Major Histocompatibility Complex?
Those things that let you present antigens
What do MHC class 1 do?
Present antigents to cytotoxic T cells
Present endogenous Antigens
Present Atigens to Cytotoxic T cells
What do MHC Class II do?
Present antigents to Th cells
Present exogenous antigens
Found on antigen presenting cells
Breifly , what is the patholphisiology of Psoriasis?
Keratinocytes under stress release interlukins and TNF etc
Dendritic cells activate who then activate T cells
T cells are attracted to dermis and release a bunch of Interlukins
This stimulates keratinocyte proliferation and AMP release.
What is AMP?
Anti-microbial Peptide
Which antibody is associated with Type 1 Hypersensitivity ?
IgE
