Pathology Flashcards
What is the aetiolgoy of Acne Vulgaris?
Androgens increase during puberty
Androgens increase the sensitvity of sebaceous glands
Keratin plugs the pilosebaceous unit
Infection with anaerobic bacteria
What does papillomatosis mean?
Irregular epithelial thickening
What is Pemphigus?
Rare autoimmune disease
Loss of intergrity of epidermal cell adhesion
What does Acanthosis mean?
Increased thickness of the epithelium
Give an example of a disease which undergos Spongiotic-intraepidermal oedema
Eczema
What is bullous Pemphigoid?
Its like pemphigus vulgaris but it attacks hemidesmosomes anchoring basal cells to the basement membrane
Where you find langerhan cells?
Upper 2/3rds of the epidermis
They are sentinals
What is this?
Lichenoid Planus
Where would you normally find melanocytes?
In the basal layer
What is the hallmark of Dermatitis Herpetiformis?
Papillary dermal microabscesses
What happens in Pemphibus Vulgaris?
IgG auto antibodies against desoglein 3
Desmosomal attachments break down resulting in Acantholysis
What other autoimmune disease is associated with Dermatitis Herpetiformis?
Coelliac Disease
What does hyperkeratosis mean?
Increased thickness of keratin
What does parakeratosis mean?
Persistence of nuclei in keratin layer
What is Normal Epidermis?
Stratified keratinising squamous epithelium
What is characteristic of Lichenoid disorders?
Damage to basal epidermis
What are the 4 main reaction patterns ?
Spongiotic-intraepidermal oedema
Psoriasifrom-elongation of the rete ridges
Lichenoid-basal layer damage
Vesiculobullous-blistering
