Common Anti-Acne Drug client education?
- ALWAYS begin and end with hand hygiene
- Clean the area to remove debris, drainage and/or residual medication
- Don clean gloves to apply topical medication if the skin is broken
- Store medication as recommended
Benzoyl Peroxide indication?
- 1st line treatment for mild to moderate acne
- improvement is seen in 4-6 weeks
Benzoyl Peroxide adverse effects?
- Peeling skin (dryness)
- Erythema (over treated area)
- Sensation of warmth
When would Benzoyl Peroxide need to be discontinued?
Drug must be discontinued if blistering and/or swelling of the skin occur (cues of an allergic reaction)
Benzoyl Peroxide client education?
Teach client to apply topically 1-4 times daily (depending on the dose, form, & HCP instructions)
Isotretinoin special considerations?
- Category X- not safe for pregnant women -> birth defects (teratogen)
- Females MUST use 2 forms of birth control while on this medication (iPLEDGE); 2 negative pregnancy tests before starting medication
- Reports of suicide & suicide attempts; have client’s report any sign of increasing depression
Tretinoin special considerations?
- Started with a low dose
- Applied every 2-3 days
- Severe sunburn can occur
- Waxing procedures are contraindicated
Fluorouracil special considerations?
- Can be applied w/ a nonmetallic applicator, clean fingertips, or gloved fingers
- If fingertips are used, client MUST wash them thoroughly after application
At what age can we tell parents to apply sunscreen on their child?
NO SUNSCREEN ON INFANTS (less than 6 months old)
What are things we can tell the parents to do to protect their child from the sun?
- Wear sunscreen
- SPF greater than 15 = reduce risk for skin cancer & early skin aging
Mupirocin indications?
Impetigo and nasal colonization with MRSA
Silver Sulfadiazine indications?
Prevention & treatment of infections in burns
Silver Sulfadiazine special considerations?
- Contraindicated in clients with an allergy to sulfonamide abx
- Sterile application
Brand name for Finasteride?
Propecia (1 mg)
Propecia special considerations?
- Women should not handle this drug without gloves or crush this drug (airborne); Category X
- Educate client to notify HCP if changes in breasts (lumps, pain, nipple discharge) occur
If a client was prescribed miotic eye drops, would it cause pupil constriction or dilation?
Pupil constriction
Why do newborn babies receive a “ribbon” of erythromycin?
Prophylaxis for neonatal conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis AND for the prevention of eye infections in newborns that may be caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
How do you administer eyedrops in patients 3 and younger?
In children younger than 3, hold pinna down and back
How do you administer eyedrops in patients 3 and older?
Adults: hold pinna up and back
What can administering cold ear drops cause?
Solutions that are too cold can cause dizziness, vertigo, and vomiting.
Ear drops client education?
- Warn that dizziness may occur after the application of the medication
- Remain supine or sitting during the medication administration
- If the solution has been refrigerated, allow it to warm to room temperature
