Skin Cancer and Burns Flashcards
What is skin cancer?
Sun damage to your skin that causes the skins’ cells to change and grow out of control
What are the 3 types of skin cancer?
Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma
What is Basal cell carcinoma? and where is it found and what is the symptoms
Uncontrolled division of cells in Basal cell layer of epidermis
-Result of chronic exposure to sunlight
-Found on exposed parts of body like face, ears, neck, back
-Symptoms: open sore that bleeds or oozes, shiny bump, scar/wound in places that are not injured
What is Squamous cell carcinoma? Where is it found and what are the symptoms
Uncontrolled division of cells that grow in squamous cells in the middle layers of the epidermis
-Found in parts of body that get sun exposure: lower lip, rim of ear
-Tumors can form
-Symptoms: wart like growth that crusts/bleeds
-Dark skinned people get this kind the most
What is Melanoma? What does it look like and who gets it the most?
Uncontrolled division of melanocytes
-Most serious and deadly
-Common in light skin, hair, and eyes
-Usually brown or black spots bc it has to do with melanocytes
-4 types of this cancer
Is skin cancer curable?
High treatable is caught early
-If not some cancers like melanoma spread fast and is very dangerous if not caught
Put the skin cancers in order from most to least common
Basal cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Melanoma
What are the ABCDs to detect Melanoma?
Asymmetry
Borders
Color
Diameter
What is a First degree burn and its symptoms?
Burn that goes through epidermis, could go through basal layer
-pain, redness, swelling
-sunburn
What is a 2nd degree burn and its symptoms?
Burn that goes through epidermis to papillary layer
-Blistering, more shiny/wet than first degree burn
What is a Third degree burn and its symptoms?
Burn that goes all the way to the reticular layer of the skin. If skin could go to hypodermis
-White or blacken color
What is partial thickness?
2nd degree burn
What is full thickness?
3rd degree burn
What must you do if you get burned?
Drink lots of fluid bc when you get burned you lose fluids and you need fluids for healing
-or make sure airways are open and clear
What is a burn?
Tissue damaged by intense heat, electricity, radiation or chemicals
