What is impetigo?
Infection of epidermis
What are the features of impetigo?
Vesicular lesions on erythematous base
Golden crust
Commonly children
Highly infectious
What is the treatment of impetigo?
Topical antibiotics
What is erysipelas?
Infection of upper dermis
What are the features of erypiselas?
Painful, red area with distinct elevated borders
High recurrence rate
What is the treatment of erysipelas?
Antibiotics
What is cellulitis?
Infection of deep dermis and subcutaneous fat
What are the features of cellulitis?
Spreading erythematous base with no distinct border
Fever is common
What are the most common organisms involved in SSTIs?
Staph aureus
Group A strep (strep pyogenes)
What is the first choice antibiotic in SSTIs?
Flucloxacillin
What is lymphangitis?
Inflammation of lymphatic system
Red line across length of arm
What are hair associated infactions?
Folliculitis- small red papules with central area of purulence
Furunculosis- boils
Carbuncles- multiseptated abscesses, systemically unwell
What are emergency SSTIs?
Necrotising fasciitis- haemorrhagic bullae, skin necrosis
Pyomyositis- infection deep in striated muscle. Abscess
Septic bursitis- cellulitis in patellar or olecranon
What are toxin mediated syndromes?
TSS- macular rash
Staph. scalded skin syndrome- bullae and skin exfoliation
Panton valentine leucocidin toxin- recurrent boils
What are the most common SSTIs?
IV catheter associated
