What is aseptic meningitis>

A

CSF shows an excessive number of lymphocytes and elevated protein
No causative organism
May be due to tumour cells in CSF, a reaction to drugs, sarcoidosis, SLE

Early clinical recognition
Rapid pathogen detection
Bactericidal antimicrobial therapy
Treat sequelae of septicaemia

What is Kernig’s test?

A

Tests meningeal irritation:
Patient lies on back. Flex one hip and knee to 90 degrees and then slowly straighten the knee while keeping the kip flexed.
In meningitis this produces spinal pain

A

Tests meningeal irritation:
Lift head and neck off the bed and flex their chin to their chest
Positive test is when this causes the patient to involuntarily flex their hips and knees
