Skin And Membrane Flashcards
Epithelial membranes
Composed of epithelial membranes and an underlying layer of fibrous connective tissue
Connective tissue membranes
Composed of various types of connective tissue, no epithelial cells present
3 types of epithelial membrane
Cutaneous, serous and mucous membrane
Cutaneous membrane
Skin, primary organ
Serious membrane
Lines body cavities. 2 layers of tissue: parietal: lines walls of body (outer) visceral: lines walls of body (inner). Pleura: thoracic, peritoneum: abdominal
Mucous membrane
Line body surfaces that open directly to the exterior such as in the respiratory tract
Connective tissue membranes
No epithelial components, produce lubricant called synovial fluid
Epidermis
Outermost and thinnest primary layer of skin. Stratified squamous epithelium
Stratum germinativum
Innermost layer of cells that continually reproduce, new cells move toward surface. Pigment layer.
Melanocytes
Pigment cells that produce brown pigment melanin
Keratin
Waterproof protein
Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer of keratin filled cells
Cyanosis
Bluish gray color decreased blood oxygen level
Vitiligo
Patchy light skin areas resulting from acquired loss of epidermal melanocytes
Dermis
Thick, innermost layer that’s gives strength to skin. Store water and electrolytes. Contains nerves that process sensory info such as pain, pressure etc.
