Q

How does the skin help regulate body temperature?

A

Activating sweat glands and allowing blood to flush into skin capillary beds so that heat can radiate to the skin surface helps with heat loss. Heat retention occurs by not allowing blood to flush into capillary beds. Essentially, your skin will activate sweating or shivering to release or gain heat.

How do the skin functions help to protect deeper tissue?

A

The skin protects deeper tissue from

  • mechanical damage by being a physical barrier containing keratin, which toughen cells, and fat cells cushion blows. The skin has pressure receptors that alert the nervous system of possible damage.
  • chemical damage by having relatively impermeable keratinized cells. It contains pain receptors that alert the nervous system yo possible damage.
  • Bacterial Damage by
