Skill Acquisition - Skill Continuums And Transfer Of Skills Flashcards
What are 4 characteristics of a skill (LACE)
Learned
Aesthetically pleasing
Consistent
Efficient
What is a skill.
A specific and defined task that can be learned and practised
What is a closed skill and give an example.
A skill which is performed in a stable predictable environment. E.g a penalty in football
What is an open skill and provide an example.
A skill which is performed in an unpredictable environment. e.g a football tackle
What is a gross skill and provide an example.
A skill which uses large muscle groups. e.g tackling an opponent in rugby
What is a fine skill and provide an example.
A skill which uses small muscles for increased accuracy. E.g throwing a dart
What is a self paced skill and provide an example.
A skill where the player controls the speed and timimg of the skill. E.g throwing a javelin
What is an externally paced skill and provide an example.
A skill where the performer has no control over the speed and timing of the skill. E.g a goalkeeper making a save in football.
What is a discrete skill and provide an example.
A skill which has a clear beginning and ending and is one distinct action. e.g a dive into a pool
What is a serial skill and provide an example.
A skill that contains several ‘discrete skills’ in order to make a more complexed movement. E.g performing a long jump
What is a continuous skill and provide an example.
A skill thats uses ‘discrete skills’ in a repetive movement. e.g running/walking
What is a high organisation skill and provide an example.
A skill which is not easily broken into separate parts. E.g a bicycle kick in football
What is a low organisation skill and provide an example.
A skill which can be easily broken down into separate parts. E.g front crawl in swimming
What is a simple skill and provide an example.
A skill where limited decision making is required. E.g throwing a dart at double 20.
What is a complex skill and provide an example.
A skill which requires several decisons during performance. E.g dribbling in football.
What is the transfer of learning?
The effect of the learning and the performance of one skill on the learning and performance of another.
What are the 4 types of transfer of learning?
1) Positive transfer of learning
2) Negative transfer of learning
3) Zero transfer of learning
4) Bilateral transfer of learning
What is positive transfer of learning?
When the learning of one skill helps another.
What is the negative transfer of learning?
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another.
Define zero transfer of learning.
When the learning of a skill has NO impact on the learning of another.
What is bilateral transfer of learning?
When the learning of one skill is passed across the body from limb to limb. e.g learning the left hook can be transferred onto your right arm.
What is massed practise.
Continuous practice with no rest intervals
What is distributed practice.
Practice which involves rest intervals between sessions
What is varied practise
Practise where the practise type and drills change
What is mental practice
Where you go over the skill in the mind without movement
What are the 4 types of practice?
- Massed practise
- Distributed practise
- Varied practise
- Mental practise
What are the 3 methods of presenting practice?
- Whole practice
- Whole part whole practice
- Progressive part practice
What is whole practice?
Where the skill is practised in its entirety
What is whole-part-whole practice?
A method of presenting practice where the skill is assessed and a weakness is identified and practised and then put together for the whole skill.
What is progressive part practice.
A method of presenting practice where the first part of the skill is practiced and then add parts gradually.
