Biomechanical Movement - Lever Systems Flashcards
How many type of levers are there?
There are 3 separate classes of levers
What is a first class lever?
A lever where the fulcrum occurs between the effort and load
Provide an example of a first class lever movement.
Any exercise which requires elbow extension such as tricep dip.
What are the three components which make up a lever?
- Fulcrum
- Load
- Effort
What is a second class lever?
A lever which occurs when the load is between the effort and the fulcrum.
What type of movement works within the second class lever?
Any exercise that requires extension of the ankle, for example calf raises.
What is a third class lever?
A lever where the effort lies between the fulcrum and load.
What is the most common form of lever which is used in the human body?
The third class lever
Provide an example of a movement which works in the third class lever?
A bicep curl.
What is the main benefit of all levers?
Large loads can be moved with a relatively small amount of effort.
What lever always has a mechanical advantage and how does it have an advantage.
Second class levers as they can move large loads with less effort.
What lever class always has a mechanical disadvantage and how does it have it?
Third class levers as they cannot lift as heavy loads.
