HEALTHCARE ACQUIRED INFECTIONS
Acquired in a hospital or other healthcare facilities that were not present or incubating at the time of a client’s admission
HEALTHCARE ACQUIRED INFECTIONS
HOW TO BREAK CHAIN OF INFECTION
(3)
Decrease source of microorganisms
Prevent transmission of microorganisms
Maximize resistance
STANDARD PRECAUTIONS (2)
use ppe
aseptic technique
Used in addition to standard precautions for patients with suspected infection with pathogens that can be transmitted by airborne, droplet, or contact routes.
TRANSMISSION BASED PRECAUTIONS
types of TRANSMISSION BASED PRECAUTIONS
(3)
airborne precautions
droplet precautions
contact precautions
Used for patients who have infections that spread through the air such as tuberculosis, varicella rubeola, and possible severe acute respiratory syndrome
Focus on diseases that are transmitted by smaller droplets, which remain in the air for longer periods of time
Airborne precautions
Used for direct and indirect contact with patients and their environments (lahat that surrounds the infected)
Direct contact refers to the care and handling of contaminated body fluids
Contact precautions
Focus on diseases that are transmitted by large droplets (greater than 5 microns) expelled into the air and by being within 3 feet of a patient. (ex: rubella, mumps, diphtheria)
—– require the wearing of a surgical mask when within 3 feet of the patient, proper hand hygiene, and some dedicated care equipment.
