Skeleton Subdivided Flashcards
Define: axial bones
Bones that form the longitudinal axis
What are the 3 main areas/parts of the skeleton? (3)
- Skull
- Vertebral Column
- Thoracic cage
What 2 sets of bone is the skull composed of? (2)
- Cranium
2. Facial bones
What is the purpose of the skull?
- Encloses and protects the fragile bone tissue
What are the main purposes of the facial bones? (2)
- Hold the eyes in an anterior position
2. Allow the facial muscles to show our feelings through the smiles or frowns
How is the mandible unique to other facial bones?
Attached to the rest of the skull by a freely movable joint
What shape of bone is the cranium mainly composed of?
Flat bones
List the 14 facial skeleton bones. (14)
- Frontal-foreband
- Palatine - forms the posterior part of the hard palate
- Parietal - most superior and lateral walls of the cranium, meet at the middle of the skull
- Zygomatic - cheek bones + eye sockets
- Temporal
- Lacrimal - passageways for tears
- Occipital
- Nasal - forms the nasal bones
- Sphenoid
- Vomer
- Ethmoid
- Mandible - lower jaw
- Maxillae - 2 maxillary bones fuse to form the upper jaw
- Hyoid
What is the name of the condition in which the palatine fails to fuse properly?
Cleft palate
What is the strongest facial bone?
Mandible
What is unique about the hyoid bone?
It is the only bone in the body that does not articulate directly with any other bone
What is the skeletal system composed of? (3)
- Joints
- Ligaments
- Cartilage
What is the other name for long bones?
Diaphysis → shaft which makes up most of the length and is composed of compact bone
What is described by “appendicular” in the skeletal system?
Limbs and girdles that are attached to the body
