Skeleton Joints And Muscles Flashcards
4 functions of the skeleton
Protection
Shape
Movement (muscles can pull on bones which moves them)
Blood cell production (inner part of some bones produce blood cells)
What is a joint?
Where bones meet
Can allow movement in different directions
Hinge joint
Single plane movement eg Extension and Flexion (forward and back)
Eg elbow and knee
Ball and socket
Flexion and extension , rotation (on an axis) , adduction and abduction (in and out) circumduction (can draw a circle)
Eg shoulder and hip
Basic structure of a long bone
Cartilage - reduces friction and absorbs compression
Compact bone- hard , strong outer layer of the bone
Bone marrow- stores fat and makes red blood cells
Spongy bone- strong, lightweight inner layer of bone
Bone end- forms joint with another bone
Major muscles in the body
- pectorals
-biceps
-abdominals
-quadriceps
-triceps
-hamstring
-calf
Btw these are only SOME of them, we don’t have to know all
Antagonistic muscles
As one muscle contracts the other relaxes
Eg
In flexion, biceps contract and raise the forearm as triceps relax
In extension, the triceps contract and lower as biceps relax
