Heart Flashcards
Arteries
Has thick muscular walls
Found in organs and tissues
Usually carries oxygenated blood away from heart
Blood under very high pressure
Veins
Usually carries deoxygenated blood
Blood is under low pressure
Valves to prevent blood backflow
Bring blood back to heart
Capillaries
Has walls one cell thick
Blood is under pressure water and other substances are squeezed out into surrounding intercellular spaces
Heart is made from
Cardiac muscles
Valves needed
To prevent backflow of blood
Semi lunar
Atrio ventricular
Double circulatory system
Route:
First part pumps blood to lungs to pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide
Second part pumps blood around the body and back to the heart as de oxygenated blood
Cardiac output
Volume of blood pumped through cardiovascular system in a minute
Stroke volume
The volume of blood pumped through the left ventricle per beat
Tidal volume
The normal volume of air displaced between inhalation and exhalation
Calculation formula
CO= SV x HR
Cardiac output = stroke volume times heart rate
How does fitness affect cardiovascular system?
Strengthens heart muscle
Improves heart’s ability to pump blood to your lungs and throughout your body
More blood to muscles
Heart muscle become more efficient and better able to pump blood through body
Better blood flow less clogging up= less heart attacks
What happens to heart rate breathing rate and depth of breathing during exercise?
When exercising the heart rate is increased , this is because when exercising muscle cells respire more than when they are at rest, as they need more energy, and therefore need more oxygen
The heart contracts and releases faster so that sufficient oxygenated blood is taken to the muscles or around the body to make sure the muscles can continue to respire
Rate and depth if breathing increase to make sure more oxygen absorbed into the blood
Get more o2 in and co2 out
Left side
To heart
Right side
To lungs to pick up oxygen
What happens to heart rate during exercise?
Heart rate increases
Move glucose , co2 and o2 in blood more quickly
