Skeletal types of bones Module 2 Flashcards
What type of bone is the clavicle
a long bone that gives greater mobility to the shoulder joint when movement is taking place
What type of bone is the scapula
a flat bone that allows the arm to attach to the trunk of the skeleton
what type of bone is the humerus
a major long bone joining the shoulder to the elbow that can move in most directions and rotate with the shoulder joint
what type of bone is the radius
a long bone found on the thumb side of the forearm. Works with the ulna in providing structure to the forearm and allowing it to rotate on the elbow joint
what type of bone is the ulna
longer bone of the forearm on the pinkie side
what type of bone are the carpals
are short bones of the wrist and fingers. Metacarpals and phalanges are long bones. They provide structure to the hand allowing it to perform fine motor skills
what type of bone is the femur
the longest and strongest bone in the body able to hold up 30 times the weight of an adult. Covered by large muscles that allow movement such as kicking and running
what type of bone is the patella
a flat bone that provides protection to the knee
what type of bone is the tibia
larger of the two long bones that form the lower leg. Bears most of the body weight and is involved in all movements of the lower leg e.g. running, kicking
what type of bone is the fibula
a slim long bone parallel with the tibia on the lateral side. Works with the tibia in providing support and stability to the lower leg and allows slight rotation from the knee joint
what type of bone are the tarsal
metatarsals and phalanges make up the foot. Tarsals are short bones while metatarsals and phalanges are long bones. Provides structure that enables leg movements
what is the pelvic girdle
the base of support for the weight of the upper body. Allows for the attachment of the lower limbs and muscles of the leg and lower back. The supporting ligaments are short and strong meaning less movement
