Q

what is a ligament

A

fibrous bands connecting bone to bone. Maintains stability in joint by restraining excessive movement. Controls degree and direction of movement

Q

what is a tendon

A

inelastic cords of tissue attaching muscle to bone. Extends across the joint which strengthens the joint and assists ligaments to hold joint closed

Q

what is synovial fluid

A

acts as a lubricant by keeping the joint well-oiled and the bones separated.

Fills a cushion between the two bones forming the joint.

Provides nutrition for cartilage and removes waste.
‘Pumps’ fluid into joint space when articular cartilage is under pressure during movement.
Fluid is more viscous in colder weather (cause of joint stiffness)
