Skeletal System Flashcards
Why do we have a skeleton
- Movement
- Protection
- Support
What is a join
Where two bones meet
To types of joint:
- Ball and socket
- Hinge
What movement is available at the hinge joints
- flexion
- extenion
Two examples of a hinge joint
- Elbow
- Knee
Two examples of a ball and socket joint
- Hip
- Shoulder
What movement is available at a ball and socket joint
- extension
- flexion
- rotation
- adduction
- abduction
How does exercise effect the skeleton
- increases bone density (strength)
- strengthens ligament
what is the name given to when bone densiy decreases with old age
Osteoporosis
How do you reduce osteoporosis
- weight bearing exercises
Define Fracture
A fracture is a broken or cracked bone
The two typed of fractures
- closed or compound
- simple or stress
Closed fracture means
it doesn’t break/damage the skin
Compound fracture means
the broken bone protrudes the skin
Simple fracture means
the break is only part way
Stress fracture is when
the muscle is unable to absorb shock
Dislocations occur at
the joint
Dislocation is when
the bone is forced out of its normal position
Sprain occur at
joints
A sprain is
a damaged ligament
Torn cartilage occurs
at a joint
Tennis and golfers elbow occur
at joints
what does RICE stand for
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevate
What does Ice do
- provides pain relief
- limit swelling
