Functions of the skeletal system
Support, movement, blood cell formation (hemopoiesis), protection of internal organs, detoxification, provision for muscle attachment, and mineral storage
Individual bones are classified by shape
Long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones, and sesamoid bones
Osteoblasts
Cells that form compact bone
Axial skeleton
Includes skull, vertebrae, and ribs. 28 bones of the skull (14 facial bones, 14 bones of the cranium)
33 bones of vertebral column (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, tailbone)
Thorax, sternum, 12 pairs of ribs
Facial bones consist of
Two nasal bones, two maxillary bones, two zygomatic bones, one mandible, two palatine bones, one vomer, two lacrimal bones, and two inferior nasal conchae
Bones of the cranium are
Single occipital, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid in the paired parietal, temporal and ossicles of the ear
Ear bones
Malleus, incus, stapes
The body framework consists of
Bone, cartilage, ligaments and joints
Appendicular skeleton
Includes girdles and limbs (arms, legs, hips, butt)
Carpals
Wrist bones
Metacarpals
Bones of the hand
Bones of the arm
Humerus, radius and ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges
Bones of the lower extremity
Femur, tibia and fibula, tarsals, metatarsals
