Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Day 14 of the cycle
Surge of LH is released from the pituitary, which stimulates ovulation in the conversion of the follicle to the corpus luteum
Corpus luteum
Secretes the hormone’s progesterone and estrogen and further stimulates development of the endometrium
If fertilization occurs
The corpus luteum remains functional
If fertilization does not occur
The corpus luteum degenerates and menstruation begins
After ovulation
The egg is swept into the oviduct or fallopian tube
Endometrium
Where the fertilized egg or zygote travels to the uterus and implants itself
Uterus
Where the developing embryo is nourished by the placenta which is formed by maternal and embryonic tissues
Estrogen
Hormone produced by the follicle initiates the preparation of the endometrium of their uterus for pregnancy
