Nervous System Flashcards
The nervous system enables us to
Perceive many of the changes that take place in our external and internal environment and to respond to those changes (seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching)
Think, reason, remember, carry out activities.
All actions of the nervous system depend on..
The transmission of nerve impulses over neurons or nerve cells
What are the main parts of a neuron?
Cell body, axon (transmit the impulse away from the cell body), dendrites (transmit the impulse toward the cell body)
What are the two divisions of the nervous system?
Central nervous system CNS
Peripheral nervous system PNS
PNS
Consists of all the nerves that transmit information to and from the CNS
Afferent
Sensory neurons transmit nerve impulses toward the CNS
Efferent
Motor neurons transmit nerve impulses away from the CNS toward the effector organs such as muscles glands and digestive organs.
What are the major parts of the brain?
Cerebrum – associated with movement and sensory input
Cerebellum – responsible for muscular coordination
Medulla oblongata – controls many vital functions such as respiration and heart rate
How long is the spinal cord?
18 inches, extends from the base of the skull to the first or second lumbar vertebra.
Simple (spinal) reflexes
Those in which nerve impulses travel through the spinal cord only and do not reach the brain
The nervous system consists of…
The brain, spinal cord, and nerves
