Skeletal system Flashcards
Bones
Protect organs. Resting ground for muscles
•leverage & support
206 bones - 177 used in voluntary movement
Skeletal System
Body’s frame work.
Composed of bones & joints
Divided in to:
Axial skeleton
Appendicular skeleton
Joints
Junctions of bones, muscles, & connective tissues at which movement occurs.
“Articulation”
More than 300 joints
Axial skeleton
Consists of skull, rib cage, vertebral column
- torso & upper head
- 80 bones
Appendicular skeleton
Includes upper and lower extremities.
Think: arms/legs/appendage
126 bones
Remodeling
Process of resorption and formation of bone.
Follows lines of stress placed on bone
Osteoclasts
During resorption, old bone tissue is broken down and removed by bone cells called osteoclasts
Osteoblasts
During bone formation, new bone tissue replaces the old. Called osteoblasts
“Blast” - “building” bone
