Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Chronic disease
An incurable illness or health condition that last for a year or more.
Functional limitations w/ need for ongoing medical care.
Responsible for 75 cents of every dollar spent on health care in the US.
Muscle imbalance
Alternation of muscle length surround a joint.
Ex: only working chest. Pectorals stronger than surrounding muscles = hunched forward posture.
Obesity
BMI of 30 or greater or is at least 30lbs over the recommended weight for their height.
BMI
Healthy - Adults < 20 = BMI of 18.5-24.9
Overweight - BMI of 25-29.9
Or 25-30lbs overweight for their recommended weight for their age.
Overweight/obese…how many?
66% Americans older than 20 are overweight
34% obese = 72 million!
Blood lipids
Chloreterol & triglycerides -> carried through blood stream by protein molecules (HDL & LDL) high density lipoproteins & low density lipoproteins.
HDL - GOOD chloresterol
LDL- BAD chloresterol
Healthy chloresterol
Healthy - Less than 200mg/DL
High - More than 240mg/dL
Diabetes Mellitus
Aka
Diabetes
Blood glucose (blood sugar) is unable to absorb in to the cells either because pancreas is unable to produce insulin or cells have become insulin resistant.
Type I & Type II
Type I Diabetes
Pancreas is unable to produce insulin.
Type II Diabetes
Cells have become resistant to insulin.
Directly related to eating habits, poor activity levels.
Deconditioned
State of loss physical fitness
Muscle imbalances, decreased flexibility, lack of core/joint stability, out of shape/fat.
Proprioception
The cumulative sensory input to the CNS from all mechanoreceptors (GTO & muscle spindles) that sense body position and limb movement.
Proprioceptively Enriched Environment
Unstable yet controllable.
Exercises that causes the body to use it’s internal balance & stabilization mechanisms.
Ex: DB press on stability ball
