What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Provides structural support, attachment site for muscles (tendons connect bone to musc.), movement, protects and encases organs, produces RBC WBC & platelets (blood cells), yellow bone marrow stores fat.
What are bones made up of? Are they a tissue or an organ?
Bones are made up of bone tissue, connective tissue (dense & cartilage), nervous tissue, and blood & lymph vessels.
Each bone is an organ.
What is bone tissue made up of?
Calcified matrix, red and yellow bone marrow.
What makes up the bone matrix?
Collagen fibres, osteocytes (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) in lacunae.
What is lacunae?
The space in which bone cells are present. It provides a home for the cells to live (in bone, these are osteocytes)
Describe bone marrow and its two types.
Red bone marrow: Contains stem cells that differentiate into blood cells.
Yellow bone marrow: Mostly fat tissue, also contains stem cells that differentiate into bone cells.
Describe osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a progressive skeletal disease characterized by the loss of bone density. It results in weakened, deteriorated bones and a stooped posture, among other symptoms like pain.
FYI:
It increases the risk of breaking a bone.
Preventative measures include a balanced diet, exercise, fall prevention and cessation of smoking.
There is no cure for osteoporosis. A variety of medications can be prescribed to slow down progression.
