skeletal system Flashcards
what are the 5 functions of the skeleton
- protection
- movement
- muscle attachment
- red blood cell production
- stores minerals
what are the 3 types of bones and give examples of each and what they help do
long bones - femur, humerus and ulna - they allow gross movements
flat bones - cranium, ribcage - they protect our vital organs
short bones - tarsals and carpals - they allow finer and more controlled movements
what are the examples of a hinge joint and what movements do they allow
ankle, elbow and knee - they allow flexion and extensions
what are the examples of ball and socket joints and what movements do they allow
hip and shoulder - they allow flexion and extension, adduction and abduction, circumduction and rotation
what the 6 features of a synovial joint and what are their functions
- membrane - contains and releases synovial fluid
- synovial fluid - lubricates and reduces friction to the joint
- cartilage - acts as a shock absorber
- capsule - surrounds the joint and so protects it
- ligament - connects bone to bone
- bursae - provides cushioning
what is adduction
movement towards the midline
what is abduction
movement away from the midline
what is flexion
bending (angle decreases)
what is extension
straightening (angle increases)
what is plantar flexion
pointing toes
whats is dorsiflexion
flexing toes
