Skeletal System Flashcards
Axial skeleton
80 bones (central skeleton)
Appendicular skeleton
126 bones (27 of then in the hand & wrist)
Long bones
Femur, tibia, radius - length exceeds diameter
Short bones
Wrist & ankle -
Flat bones
Skull, clavicle, mandible, scapula - protects underlying organs
Irregular bones
Vertebrae - fulfill specific functions
Sesamoid bones
Oval, pea-like, found in tendons - function as a pulley, includes patella
Bone tissue - cortical
Dense, solid bone - forms outer shell
Bone tissue-Trabecular
Spongy, non dense - inner scaffolding
Process
Bony projections
Fossa
Hollow
Condyle
Enlargement for articular surface
Tubercular
Bump for tendon attatchment
Axial skeleton
Skull, spinal column, vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, thoracic cage
Skull
22 bones
Spinal column
26 bones
Cervical vertebrae
Neck - 7
Thoracic vertebrae
Chest - 12 - pair with ribs
Lumbar vertebrae
Lower back - 5
Sacrum
1 (5 fused bones)
Coccyx
1 (4 fused bones) - tailbone
Thoracic cage
12 pairs of ribs
Vertebrae function
Provides strong, flexible support for the body - protects spinal cord & nerves - absorbs shock through intervertebral discs
Sternum
3 fused bones - manibrium, body, xiphoid process —- the clavicles & 10 pairs of ribs join to the sternum
Appendicular skeleton
The pectoral girdle (chest), the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle (hips), the lower limbs
Clavicle
Medial end articulates with sternum - lateral end articulates with scapula
Carpals
Wrist 8x2 (irregular bones) - scaphoid=under thumb & lunate
Metacarpals
Hand 5x2 (back of hand, under fingers) #1 thumb
Phalanges
14 bones - proximal, middle, distal
The pelvic girdle
Ilium + pubis + ischium = os coax (x2)
Sacrum
Skeletal attachment point for the pelvic girdle to the rest of the body
Ischial tuberosity
Male - 90 or less female- 100 or more
