Skeletal Pt. 2 Flashcards
What types of stress are bones subjected to?
Tension, Compression, Shearing, Bending, and Torsion
Tension
Stretching/Pulling
Compression
Pushing
Shearing
Opposite forces coming from opposite sides, not necessarily at the same point
Bending
Self-Explanatory
Torsion
Twisting
Types of Fractures
Compound Vs. Simple
Compound Fracture
Also known as open fracture, NOT a bone broken in multiple pieces. Bone exposed through break in skin.
Simple Fracture
Also known as closed fracture. Bone is not exposed
Transverse Fracture
Broken in two pieces at no angle.
Oblique Fracture
Broken into two pieces with an angle
Greenstick Fracture
Shaft is broken on one side and bent on the other
Physeal Fracture
Common in younger animals. Fracture of the growth plate (which is made of cartilage_
Comminuted Fracture
Bone is broken into fragments. Hard to reattach if they are too small.
Best way to fix oblique fracture
pin/wire repair. A pin is placed in the bone to prevent movement of fracture. It goes through medullary cavity. It prevents “side to side” movement but not torsion. Not as helpful on transverse.
