Skeletal / Muscular Systems Flashcards
What is the role of the skeletal system?
Gives structure and support, protects vital organs, allows for movement, produces red blood cells, stores minerals.
What are the three sections of the spine?
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
What types of joints are there in the body and what are examples of each?
Plane joint- tarsals Hinge joint- knee or elbow Pivot joints- 1st & 2nd vertebrae in the neck Saddle joints- wrist and thumb Ball and socket joints- shoulder
what is compact bone and where is it found in the body?
Dense , hard outer layer/shell of most bones in the body , provides strength and rigidity
What is spongey bone and where is it found?
Located at the ends of the long bones, inner layer if long bones , inside vertebrae, ribs, skull and bones of joints. Makes and stores bone marrow , reduces weight of skeleton, shock absorber when we move, mineral storage (99% of body’s calcium & 85% of phosphorus).Softer and weaker than compact bone but is more flexible and makes up about 20% of the human body.
What is bone marrow and where is it located?
Inside large bones
Creates red blood cells, Stores nutrients
what is cartilage and where is it located in the body?
soft bone that is located at the joints to make bones run smoothly against each other.
What is the main function of the muscular system?
Movement but also to help stabilise our joints, maintain posture and generate heat during activity. The muscles attach to the bones of the skeletal system , pulling on them to allow for movement of the body.
What are antagonistic muscles?
When two muscles join onto the same bones. When one muscle contracts the other relaxes allowing for bones around the joint to move.
What is a tendon?
A flexible but not elastic chord of fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone.
What is a ligament?
A short band of strong fibrous tissues that connects bones to bones or holds joints together to connects bone to cartilage.
