Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the role of the circulatory system?
Organ system that permits blood to circulate and transport nutrients, oxygen , carbon dioxide , hormones and blood cells to and from cells in the body.
How do the circulatory and respiratory system work together?
Work together to circulate blood and oxygen throughout the body. Air moves in and out of the lungs through the trachea , bronchi and bronchiles. Blood moves in and out of the lungs through the pulmonary veins and arteries that connect the heart.
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
Right atrium
Left atrium
What is an artery?
an elastic blood vessel that transports blood away from the heart.
What is a vein?
Less flexible than arteries. They have valves that open and close to let blood through. Veins carry deoxygenated blood from the body t the heart.
What are capillaries?
They are very thin (5microm) and are composed of only two layers of cells. There are so small that red blood cells need to flow through them in single file. Their walls are thin to allow substances to easily and quick diffuse. Their primary function is to transport and exchange gasses, fluids and nutrients in the body.
What is the role of the red blood cell?
To carry haemoglobin which allows them to transport oxygen to body cells and deliver carbon dioxide to the lungs.
Where are red blood cells made?
In the bone marrow
What components is blood made out of?
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Plasma
What is the role of white blood cells?
The cells of the immune system that clot wounds with platelets and fight diseases or infection by ingesting or destroying damaging cells.
Where are white blood cells made?
In the bone marrow
What are the role of the platelets?
Function is to react to bleeding from blood vessel injury, by clumping there by initiating a blood clot. Platelets are so small they make up just 4% of the blood.
What is the role of plasma?
Plasma carries water , salts enzymes and proteins that help blood to clot (as well as containing glucose). THe primary purpose of plasma is to transport nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of the body that need it.
