How does smoking cause cancer in the lungs?

A

Destroys the walls of the alveoli and damages the cells that line the lungs. Cells effected by the smoke will have damaged DNA which can lead to cancerous growth.The chemicals in the smoke also cause the bodies cleaning mechanism to fail.
