Skeletal Muscles Flashcards
Isometric contraction
No changes to the length of muscle
Isotonic concentric contraction
Length of the muscle shortens
Isotonic eccentric contraction
The length of the muscle lengthens
Lever
A rigid structure that can move at a fixed point
Fulcrum
A fixed point around which the lever moves
Effort
A force which causes movement (eg skeletal muscles)
Load
A force that opposes movement
5 muscle fibre classification
Parallel
Fusiform
Circular
Triangular
Pennate
Parallel with example
Fasicicles are parallel to longitudinal axis of the muscle
Eg rectus abdominus muscle
Fusiform with example
Arrange parallel but have a wider section in the middle eg biceps brachii
Circular with example
Concentric circle arrangement for sphincter muscle eg mouth, anus
Triangular/convergent muscle and example
Fascicles spread over broad area converge at thick central tendon eg pectorals major muscle
Unipennate muscle and example
Fascicles are arranged on only one side of tendon
Eg-extensor digitorum longus
Bipennate and example
Fascicles are arranged on both sides of centrally positioned tendons
Eg-rectus femoris
Multipennate and example
Multiple bipennate muscles arranged together
Eg-deltoid muscle
