skeletal Flashcards
list functions of the skeletal system
support, protection, movement, storage, blood cell production
list the five main types of bones
long, short, flat, irregular, specialised
what are the two main segments of the skeletal system
Axial and appendicular
list key parts of the axial
skull, vetebratal collum, ribs, sternum
list key parts of the appendicular
limb joints, tarsus, metacarpals, gidgets, scaupla, ulnar ect.
what parts make up the vertebratal colum
cervical, thoratic, lumbar, sacrum, caudal
what is the first and second cervical vertebra

Femur, tibia and fibular
list the correct name for ankle, arch and toes
Tarsal, metatarsal and phalanges
Describe the 3 main bone classifications
- compact / dense / cortical
- Cancellous / spongy
- Medullary / marrow
describe the strucutre of flat bones
suture are lines of cartilage of which hold the peices of the skull together. the cross section of the bones is made of three layers, inner compact, spongy and outer compact.
describe the make up of the compact bone
The blood vesses run through the central canal which is surronded by layers of lamellae, these are called osteon, round these are they external circumferential lamellae which lies just bellow the periosteum, which is attached through perforating fibers.
descibe bone cells and their function
Osteocytes - mature cells that cannot divide, they maintain the mineral content and matrix.
Osteoblasts - produces new bone matrix by making and releasing protiens and organic compounds.
Osteoclasts - Cells that remove bone and rescycles thoes cells later.
