Q

what is the function of the small intestine?

A

The major site for digestion, where most of the carbohydrates, lipids and proteins are absorbed.

Q

what are vili and what are they made from? and what is there function?

A

Vili are fold in the skin, they are lines with microvili, which are further folds. (this maxamises surface area)
Inside of the villi are capillary beds that surround lacteal which are the central lymphatic vessels. Deep to the capillary are the vessels connected superficial to the muscle layer. This makes up the mucosa layer.

Q

what are features of the rumen organ

A

stores and processes plant material
(37 celsius)
Thick and large hair like texture which allows for mechanical breakdown
ideal enviroment for fermentation
lots of gas build up from the fermentation

Q

what are features of the omasum organ

A

Highly folded for a large surface area for absorption of water and salts.
The folds are laminae and they squeeze the moisture out of the ingesta

A

‘true stomach’
enzymatic digestion
secretes digestive juice
absorbes some nutrients

Q

what is the function of the galbladder

A

stores bile that the liver produces. This bile becomes concentrated and is then released into the duodenum which breaks down fats.

Q

what is the function of the pancreas (digestive)

A

both exocrine (produce insulin) and endocrine (Pancreatic juice) functions, the pancreatic juice made from water, enzymes and electrolytes are secreted into the duodenum via the pancreatic duct.

Q

Explain the processes of motility, secretion, digestion & absorption

A

Motility: allows the food to either be propulsed along the tract or mixed.
Secretion: helps regulate gastral tract function through secretory organs (pancreatic juice, salvia, bile ect) hormones, paracrine and autocrines.
Digestion: when macromolecules are broken down to simpler molecules through hydrolysis.
Absorption: smaller molecules are absorbed by the gastrinal tract into the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

How Hydrolysis breaks Fats

A

Breaking apart ester bonds

18

How Hydrolysis breaks Proteins

A

Breaking apart peptide bonds

19

how are carbohyrates broken in rumenents vs monogastrics

A

21
Q

A
22
Q

Explain the process of rumination

A

Regurgitation, remasticate, reswallow

23
Q

Describe the difference between ruminant & non-ruminant digestive systems with respect to physiology

A

Monogastric is far more effective as they are digesting food they are capable of so they do not relay on extra organs and microbial environments
The horse is the least effective digestive system
