A Soldier makes suicidal threats. What are your actions?
Place the soldier under watch. Notify chain of command. Immediately recommend a behavioral health evaluation. Counsel the Soldier on their options for seeking help and ensure the Soldier that receiving help for behavioral health is not a bad thing and will not permanently effect them in a negative way. Additionally, ensure the counseling covers the lasting effects of suicide on friends, family, and the unit as a whole.
Why is counseling important?
Counseling is used as a tool to guide and mentor Soldiers. It allows leaders and Soldiers to see and track professional growth during the Soldier’s tenure and can help paint a bigger picture of the Soldiers strengths, weaknesses and determine how they develop as a Soldier.
