Sunny sheltered Fertile, well drained, loamy soil. Soil depth of 30-45cm depending on crop Ideal pH around 6.7 Adequate water supply nearby As level as possible. Avoid frost pockets Wheelbarrow and tool access Shelter from wind

Living windbreaks
A
Hedges ideal
Allow air to filter thro and avoids turbulence a solid structure can create.
Hedge shouldn’t be so close it competes
Can take several years to reach desired height
Needs ongoing maintenance.
Take up more space than artificial.
Can encourage beneficial organisms but also harbour pests and disease.
Suitable species - Crataegus monogyna, Pinus Nigra, x cuprocyparis leylandii, carpinus betulus.
