Q

Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE)

A

Prognostication of a sire’s ability to impregnate females

  • Typically performed on sires that are used for natural reproduction in commercial herds and as a routine exam in sires for AI companies

Q

5 Steps of BSE

A
  1. History and general info - supporting info
  2. General physical exam - physical soundness
  3. Physical exam of repro tract - physical soundness
  4. Collection and examination of semen - semen quality
  5. Evaluation of libido and mating ability - servicing capacity

Q

Physical abnormalities associated with poor semen quality

A
  1. Feet and leg issues such as corkscrew claws, lameness, swollen hocks, etc
  2. Scrotum issues such as frostbite, excess fat, scrotal-testicular adhesion, etc
  3. Testes - soft testes, degenerated testes, hypoplastic, cryptorchidism
  4. Epididymis - missing cauda (tail), enlarged cauda, small cauda, enlarged caput (head)
  5. Other - vesicular adenitis, inguinal herniation, short penis, penile warts, penile hematoma

Q

Body Condition Score

A

Has an effect on consistency of testes and spermatic cord, higher BCS (obesity) is associated with lower proportion of bulls with poor quality semen

Q

Scrotal Circumference

A

Measure of sire fertility as testes size is correlated with semen quality

-based on age of bull

Q

What does traditional BSE identify?

A

Sires whose fertility is substantially affected since it is a pass or fail exam (binary response)

Q

Is sire fertility a spectrum?

A

Yes, but it is not a binary trait. Bulls that pass BSE may have different levels of fertility

Q

How often do sires in AI centers check semen quality?

Q

Sire Conception Rate (SCR) aka Sire Fertility (SF)

A

Phenotypic trait, its an estimated outcome after a certain number of inseminations

+ SRC means bull has higher rate of conception than others

Q

Uncompensable Trait

A

Are those that influence quality of sperm, either in morphology or genetics; something that won’t change even if you add more sperm
