Sinusitis Definition and Classification
A
- Inflammation of membranous lining of sinuses
- Acute: lasting 7-30 days
- Subacute: 4-12 wekks
- Recurring
- Chronic: >90 days
- Viral disease tends to last less than 10 days whereas worsening symptoms after 5 days, or symptoms lasting longer than 10 days suggest bacterial infection

A
-Palpate sinuses

Acute Sinusitis
A
- Non resolving cold
- Local sinus pain with purulent rinorrhoea
- Facial discomfort, nasal obstruction, decreased or absent sense of smell

A
-Not generally required

Acute Sinusitis Management
A
- OTC pain relief
- Intranasal decongestant
- Antibiotics only if lasting 3 weeks, systemically unwell, or multiple comorbidities
