Sinusitis Definition and Classification

A
  • Inflammation of membranous lining of sinuses
  • Acute: lasting 7-30 days
  • Subacute: 4-12 wekks
  • Recurring
  • Chronic: >90 days
  • Viral disease tends to last less than 10 days whereas worsening symptoms after 5 days, or symptoms lasting longer than 10 days suggest bacterial infection

  • OTC pain relief
  • Intranasal decongestant
  • Antibiotics only if lasting 3 weeks, systemically unwell, or multiple comorbidities
