- 1894 a rebellion against the corrupt Korean government of the King of Korea.
- King requested Japanese and Chinese troops to help quash the rebellion.
- Both countries refused to withdraw troops.
- Ito Hirobumi demanded changes to the Korean government where China disagreed.
- Japan seized the Kings palace, in order the declare Korea as an I dependent state.
- Chinese reinforcements arrived, and was sunk by Japanese navy
- A state of war existed.

Due to many victories, news of the success caught the world by surprised and showed western powers that Japan had quickly mastered the art of modern warfare.

- China had to recognise Korea as independent state.
