China was in a political and economical situation that was growing. Tzu hsi, empress rejected western influence and modernisation.
The boxer rebellion
Attack of Chinese on westerners crushed by international army. Russia gained control over Manchuria.
Anglo Japanese alliance
Alliance between Japan and Britain due to the fear of Russian moves in the east.
Both countries recognised Japan’s interest in Korea and britains in China.
If nation was threatened they would take necessary measures within China or Korea.
Agreeing to aid if a third power is involved.
Agreement to remain for 5 years.
Russia and Japan.
Japan wanted Russia to recognise their interest In Korea in order for Japan to recognise Russia’s interest in Manchuria.
Russia only partially agreed due to ‘strategic position’
The war
8 February, Japan destroyed Russia’s naval fleet at port Arthur.
10 feb, Japan declares war on Russia. Troops were forced out of Korea in three months.
September, Japan moved into South Manchuria.
2 January 1905, Japan captures port Arthur after 5 month siege. Winning land battles.
27-28 May. The Russian Baltic fleet was destroyed after 7 months sailing. At the battle of Tsushima.
5 September treaty of ports mouth ended the war.
Treaty of Portsmouth
First time Asian power beat western rival. Russia accepted offer make by Theodore Roosevelt as peacemaker.
1. Russia recognised Japan’s interest.
2. Lease of the liaotung peninsular to Japan.
3. Russia surrenders control of southern Manchurian railway to Japanese.
4. Southern half of Sakhalin given to Japan.
Both nations not to interfere with decisions made by China on Manchuria.
