Single Displacement Reactions Flashcards
What is the formula for single diaplcement reactions?
A + BC →AC + B
Define single displacement reactions
a reactions where an element displaces another element in a compound, producing a new compound and an element
What will a metal replace in a single displacement reaction?
a cation (metal or H)
What will a non-metal replaace in a single displacement reaction?
an anion (non-metal)
Treat acids and water as if they are
ionic compounds
What must the reactants be in a single displacement reaction?
an element and a compound
What is the metal activity series?
a list of elements arrange in order of their observed reactivity in single displacement reactions
Why is hydrogen included in the metal activity series when it is not a metal?
because it can form positive ions
What are the two things that the metal reactivity series can tell us?
one element can displace elements below it and can form comounds in solution but cannot displace elements above it.
the farther apart two elements are, the more likely it is that the dispalcement reactions will occur quickly,
** not all metals will displace hydrogen from water or an acid **
What is the halogen acitivity series?
an activity series for halogens
What are problems with the activity series?
series worls well as long as the reactions being predicted occur at room temperature and in aqueous solution.
aluminum would be expected to displace hydrogen from steam, but in fact it won’t unless the aluminum oxide film on its surface is scurbbed off.
