Simpson's Index of Diversity Flashcards
What is simpson’s index of diversity?
measure of species biodiversity
takes into account - species richness and eveness
What is simpson’s index of diversity equation?
D = 1 - (E(n/N)^2)
d is always between 0 and 1
What is n and N?
n - total number of individuals of one type of species
N - total number of individuals of all species
What does a high value indicate?
high species biodiversity, high species richness, high species evenness
stable ecosystem, ecosystem should be conserved
What does a low value for d indicate?
low species biodiversity, not a stable ecosystem, ecosystem
is dominated by one or a few species (low species evenness), change in one species can have
an affect on the whole ecosystem
