Investigating Biodiversity Flashcards
How can you compare genetic diversity?
within a species and in between a species
by:
comparing DNA or amino acid sequence
observing characteristics - put into groups
What is diversity caused by?
genetic differences e.g. blood type
environmental differences e.g. nutrition
Why do you have to sample a population?
to see how diverse it is
it is impossible to sample the whole population
Why should you take large sample sizes?
the data should represent the whole population - need enough data for statistical test
select sample at random - to avoid bias e.g. using random number generator
What is standard deviation?
the average variation of the data away from the mean (how spread out the data is)
overlap - not statistically different
not overlap - statistically different
