In Situ & Ex Situ Conservation Flashcards
What are the two types of conservation?
in situ & ex situ
What is in situ?
it is on the site conservation of species in their natural habitat e.g. wild life reserves and marine conservation zones
keeping them on their natural habitat in a
natural enviroment e.g. wildlife reserves and marine reserves
What is ex situ?
it is the off site conservation of species in a location outside their natural habitat
take species away from its habitat and conserve it another location
e.g. seed banks, botanic gardens, zoo, etc
What is insitu conservation?
e.g. wildlife reserve and marine conservation zones
habitat and species are conserved/saved at the same time
control population of invasive (non-native species) e.g. rats in New Zealand
legal protection e.g. trade in ivory (elephant horns)
supplementary feeding / resting boxes - helps species
limitations -
hunting is hard to control
habitat can be destroyed - unavoidable if habitat cant be saved e.g. climate change
What is ex situ conservation?
e.g. seed banks, botanic gardens, and zoos
health of individuals can be monitored
reduce mortality rate of young e.g. eggs can be artificially incubated
protection from hunting
reduce interspecific intraspecific competition
mates can be selected to maintain genetic biodiversity
limitations -
few breeding individuals - genetic biodiversity decreases
some species dont breed well in captivity e.g. panda
expensive and long term
