Conservation Agreements Flashcards
What are the three types of conservation agreements?
convention on international trade in endangered species (CITES) (international)
bio convention on biological diversity (international) -
countryside stuwardship scheme (CSS)(local - uk)
What is CITES?
international agreement to stop the trade in endangered species (live
or dead)
ensures that trade doesnt endanger wild populations
prohibits trade in wild plants - allows trade in artificially propagated plants
allows some trade in less endangered species
What is bio convention on biological diversity?
internation agreement to use habitats, ecosystems and organisms sustainably
share genetic resources
share access to scientific knowledge
to raise profile of biodiversity with governments and public (to make people understand how important it is to mainain biodiversity)
cooperate on biodiversity issues
What is CSS?
gives financial incentives to land managers (farmers) to look after
the enviroment
e.g. restoring wildlife habitats e.g. woodland, reducing agricultural pollution
preservation of habitats important in the conservation of rare species-
